Project Name: Enhancing climate resilience of India’s coastal communities
Date Complaint Filed:  Tuesday, July 14, 2020
Date Complaint Registered:  Wednesday, September 9, 2020
    Project Description:
"The Enhancing Climate Resilience of India's Coastal Communities (GCF) project aims to enhance the resilience of the lives and livelihoods of the most vulnerable populations, particularly women, in the coastal areas of India."
Requestor(s): Democratic Traditional Fishers Workers Forum (DTFWF) in association with Fridays for Future Andhra Pradesh (FFF AP)
    Synopsis of Complaint:
The issues raised relate to the felling of mangroves in Andrha Pradesh to make way for housing developments, and that the destruction of these mangroves will lead to loss of livelihoods for local communities, negative environmental impacts, and were done in a manner not consistent with applicable social and environmental safeguards, including proper consultation and stakeholder engagement.
    News and Updates:
    • 16 April 2022 -- Update Regarding SECU's Field Work in Kakinada, India -- The Social and Environmental Compliance Unit (SECU), part of UNDP's Independent Accountability Mechanism, conducted field work in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, India in connection to a complaint regarding the GCF-financed, UNDP-implemented "Enhancing Climate Resilience of India's Coastal Communities" project. Contrary to what has been suggested in The Hindu newspaper online and possibly elsewhere, SECU is not investigating coastal erosion or the lawfulness of the destruction of mangroves/mudflats, as these issues do not fall within its internal oversight mandate. SECU conducts compliance reviews to ensure adherence to and promotion of UNDP's Social and Environmental Standards in the context of its projects.
